EAST FRONT Readme
SCENARIO DESIGNERS
Doug and Denise Bevard of Pegasus Enterprises designed many of the
individual scenarios for East Front. We would like to extend them special
thanks for their time and efforts.
WARNING!
Make sure your monitor display is set for 16-bit color. The game
was designed with 16-bit graphics, and displaying at a lower color depth
will not give you the detailed graphics you expect. Also, running at a
highercolor depth could result in the game running much slower than normal.
WHEN EDITING SCENARIOS AND OTHER FILES, DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE
TAMPER WITH THE OOB FILES. THIS WILL LEAD TO SERIOUS GAMEPLAY PROBLEMS IN ANY
OTHER GAME AREAS.
NOTES
The program requires you to have the EAST FRONT CD in your computer's CD
drive in order to be able to play the game.
INSTALLATION SIZES: The following provides a guide to how many MB each
type of installation will place on your hard drive.
Compact Install: about 60 MB
Typical Install: about 110 MB
Custom Install: from 5 MB (no options selected) to 330 MB (all
options selected)
Uninstalling EAST FRONT
To uninstall the game, use Add/Remove Programs in the Windows
Control Panel. It is highly recommended that you uninstall the game this way.
Just deleting the files from your hard drive will not remove important
information from your system.
TUTORIAL
There are three Tutorial missions included on the East Front CD.
For a detailed text "walk through" of the first turn of Tutorial Mission 1,
we recommend reading the tutorial.doc file (located in the East Front folder
on your system after installation). This document will open in WordPad for
Windows 95.
HOTKEYS
For a complete list of hotkeys, consult the General Help file.
This can be accessed by pressing the F1 key from within the game.
VERSION 1.02 11/97
Fixed bug that caused brigade-level camapigns to crash during generation.
Fixed wrong German tank type in Molvotitsy.scn.
VERSION 1.01 11/97
Added word-wrap for organizations and Page Up/Down buttons in Unit Handbook.
The Range Dialog graph in the Unit Handbook can now be closed by left-
clicking on it.
Pressing the F4/F5 keys calls up additional data (not supplied elsewhere)
on all the units in the game. F4 shows miscellaneous information; F5 lists
the units' nominal attack strength at various ranges.
The Menu Bar is 'on' by default if it was 'on' when the game was last exited.
Fixed incorrect firing sound when leader is stacked with firer.
Ski units now ski (instead of run) when they move.
Worked on various aspects of the campaign games: setup, A/I, reinforcements,
replacements, mission generation, upgrades, etc.
Revised the tutorial document.
Fixed Visible Hex FOW info leak.
Fixed rotated-map airplane graphics bug.
Fixed rotated-map firing animation bug.
Fixed bug that sometimes allowed Fields to show up under No-Field conditions.
Fixed bug that sometimes prevented units from being resupplied.
Fixed bug that caused premature loss of Fatigue.
Fixed bug that caused premature recovery from Disruption when stacked with
a commander.
Fixed 3D Zoom-Out smoke graphics bug.

Implemented solution to "Failure to create Direct Sound object" error.
VERSION 1.0 10/97
The following important explanations were left out of the Players Guide:
CLICKING
When clicking is mentioned in the manual, it refers to a left
mouse click unless noted otherwise.
LEADERS
A leader who is stacked with a firing unit that is under his
command will modify the attack/assault value of that attack/assault equal
to that leader's Command value (listed in the leader's Unit Info Box),
provided the leader has Actions Points greater than or equal to the Action
Point firing cost of the FIRING unit.
Only the leader with the highest command value participating in an
assault modifies his side by the mentioned combat modifiers.
A leader will modify the morale of each unit under his command that
occupies his hex. This will be noted by the unit's morale being red in
the Unit Info Box. The morale of the unit will be equal to the morale of
the leader if the leader's morale is higher than the unit's. If the leader's
morale value is less than or equal to the unit's, the unit's morale is
increased by one.
RESUPPLY AND HEADQUARTERS
At the start of each turn, all units that fired in the previous turn
and all headquarters (HQs) will check to see if they are Low on Ammo (aka Out
of Supply). The "Supply Range of HQs" section of the Parameter Data in the
Help menu of the Menu Bar shows the range beyond which a unit will have less
than a 50% chance of resupply from that HQ. The closer a unit is to its HQ,
the greater its chance for resupply, with a unit that is in a hex with its
HQ having a 100% chance of resupply (provided the HQ is in supply). All
these checks are performed automatically.
Units that are out of supply are treated as having only half their
strength-point value when they fire, and as having only 3/4 of their
strength-point value when they assault.
DISRUPTION
A unit becomes Disrupted when it fails a morale check. Disrupted
units fire at half strength. For a unit to become undisrupted it must pass
a morale check. Hint: Place the leader of the unit in the hex with the unit
to raise the unit's morale.
ELEVATION EFFECTS ON FIRING
Units firing at an enemy from a higher elevation have a 10% increase
to their effectiveness. Units firing at an enemy from a lower elevation have
a 10% decrease in their effectiveness.
DETAIL LEVELS
By default, the game does not display the results of combat. This
is considered the Low detail level. To set a different level of detail,
choose Details and Medium in the Options menu in the Menu Bar. (If the Menu
Bar is not currently visible, press the M key to display it.) For even more
detail, click on the button in the upper left corner of the Damage Results
box when it appears on-screen.
ISOLATION
A unit is isolated if at the beginning of of its turn it cannot
trace a path of hexes to the edge of the map that does not pass within
one hex of an enemy combat unit.
An isolated unit cannot be resupplied.
SCENARIO INFORMATION DIALOG
When you view the scenario information dialog the text may run
longer than box. To scroll through the text use the page up and page down
keys to scroll through the information.
UNIT HANDBOOK
For more information on a unit, including its history and movement
costs, highlight the unit and hit the F2 key. To scroll the text you can
use the Page Up and Page Down keys on your keyboard.
CAMPAIGN NOTES
Follow this procedure for playing a campaign game.
1. Choose the campaign you wish to play and the side you wish to be.
Also select the size of the campaign you wish (battalion,
regiment, brigade, etc.)
2. Select a character and photo for your character. Here you can also
choose to lead infantry or armor units and the AI level.
3. Now you will be led through a series of screens in which you will
choose your organization (your corps, division, regiment, etc.)
4. Once you begin your mission you will be given your orders for
the scenario.
5. Play the scenario.
6. Upon conclusion you will briefed on how you did. You may also
receive a medal and/or a promotion.
7. You can proceed on to the next mission. If you have replacement
points available, you can improve the strength of one or more
units that took losses in the prior scenario. These points
cannot be saved for future use.
SAVING A CAMPAIGN GAME
The Save functions in the File menu, as well as New and Open, are
disabled in the campaign game. Upon exiting a scenario (using the X key or
the Exit command in the File menu), the campaign will be automatically saved.
EXIT OBJECTIVE HEXES
Some scenarios will have exit objective hexes. These hexes have a
face value of zero. In the Objective dialog they will be listed as zero
with an X. The hexes value only applies to the side which is displayed.
As units are removed from the map, at that hex, objective points will be
added to that sides total, based on the units strength.
PLAYTESTERS
The following playtesters were added to our team after the manual
went to press. We would like to take this opportunity to thank:
George Chow, Ida Chow, James W. Johnson and Tom H Padgett Jr.
EAST FRONT STRATEGY GUIDE
Look for the "TalonSoft's East Front Strategy Guide" by Marc Dultz
at a computer store near you.
GENERAL
WIN 95 USERS: The following apply to certain WIN 95 programs/configurations
We strongly recommend that you obtain and install the "Service
Pack 1" upgrade from Microsoft. To see if your machine has been
upgraded with the Service Pack, open the Control Panel and double-
click on "System". The "General" dialog box should state that your
system is "Microsoft Windows 95 4.00.950a". If the "a" suffix is
missing, you need to install the Service Pack. (If the suffix is a
"b", you do not need to install the Service Pack.)
Due to certain incompatibilities with Microsoft Plus, we strongly
urge you to disable that program's System Agent before running any
TalonSoft game. To disable System Agent hit Ctrl-Alt-Del and close
System Agent.
If you experience an error message that reads "...MGSRV32 caused a
General Protection Fault..." when opening a scenario, be sure to
restart your computer before trying to launch the game again.
The game may not be compatible with certain background tasks such
as virus checkers, so if you have problems try running the game
with these disabled.
Troubleshooting WIN 95 Modem Problems
The following is a suggested solution to the modem problems some
people are having with the Battleground series in Win 95. Just
follow these steps to synchronize the modem with the game.
1-From the main Win95 screen, select START.
2-Highlight TASKBAR and select CONTROL PANEL.
3-When the Control Panel window opens, double-click SYSTEM.
4-From the System window, select the DEVICE MGR Tab.
5-Double Click the appropriate communications port (1 or 2)
NOTE: Choosing COM 4 may cause problems in Win 95.
6-After selecting the appropriate port, apply these choices:
-Bits per second should be 38400
-Flow Control should be HARDWARE
7-Click OK to apply the changes.
This should synchronize the modem with Windows 95.
To access the Windows 95 start menu, hit Ctrl + Esc.
